What’s Wrong with Fast Fashion?

Impact of Fast Fashion

Fast fashion has been a hot topic recently, and some of you may be familiar with the term. Fast fashion is a practice in the fashion industry that prioritizes production speed and bringing the latest trends to market quickly and at low prices.

This naturally attracts many consumers because they can afford trendy styles at affordable prices. According to a 2022 United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) report, 60% of today’s clothing is purchased with a relatively short usage time, and every second a truckload of textile waste is dumped in landfills.

One of the impacts of the fast fashion trend is the accumulation of textile waste, due to overproduction caused by the fashion industry producing more products than the market needs. Many fast fashion products are made from synthetic materials such as nylon and polyester, which are made from plastic and contain microplastics. After production, these materials cannot decompose naturally.

When washed, microplastic particles are released and carried into rivers that we often use as water sources for daily needs. In addition to contributing waste and polluting water, the fashion industry also contributes to air pollution. This can have a negative impact on health and the environment. If we as consumers do not pay attention and turn a blind eye, imagine how big the impact will be?

To meet growing market demand, workers often have to work long hours. Excessive overtime to meet production targets can affect workers’ health and quality of life. Did you know that company profits are not always commensurate with workers’ wages?

This inequality clearly demonstrates injustice. Some fast fashion industries frequently employ underage children, often receiving minimal wages but facing high work demands. This situation indicates a violation of important international labor standards, such as ILO Conventions 100, 138, and 182.
