Recently, there have been several shocking incidents involving Indonesian soldiers serving on a peacekeeping mission in Lebanon. These events occurred so suddenly that they surprised many people, especially in Indonesia.

According to Reuters, three Indonesian peacekeepers were killed in two separate incidents in March that occurred within 24 hours. In April, another peacekeeper died in a separate incident, bringing the total number of casualties to four.

To date, it is still not entirely clear what actually happened. This situation has caused many people to worry about the safety of peacekeeping forces serving in dangerous conflict areas. Many Indonesians also feel sad and disappointed because these soldiers were only trying to help maintain peace and protect civilians in Lebanon.

The Need to Reassess UN Responsibility

I believe that these incidents should encourage a reassessment of the United Nations’ responsibility toward peacekeeping personnel. As the organization responsible for overseeing peacekeeping missions, the UN has an obligation to ensure that personnel serving under its mandate receive adequate protection and support.

There are two main reasons for this: the protection of personnel on duty and maintaining trust in the peacekeeping mission itself. If the organization fails to respond adequately, doubts about its effectiveness will inevitably arise. Therefore, I believe that the UN must take stronger measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Growing Concerns Over Peacekeeper Safety

This situation is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore. The consecutive incidents that have occurred are raising concerns because they do not appear to be isolated cases and may raise questions about security conditions in the field.

During a UN session, the Indonesian representative emphasized that the safety of peacekeeping forces must be a top priority and called for a clear and transparent investigation. However, to date, there has been no clear answer regarding who is responsible, so it is understandable that many parties continue to question the situation.

Slow responses can also reduce the sense of security among personnel in the field, while troop-contributing countries, including Indonesia, expect protection that reflects the commitments made by the UN.

A Broader Global Challenge

The safety of peacekeeping forces is a serious global issue. According to CNN Editorial Research, there are approximately 53,213 active UN peacekeeping personnel, including military, police, and civilian staff. Since 1948, at least 4,496 peacekeepers have died during missions, and almost 80% of those deaths have occurred since 1993.

These figures indicate that peacekeeping missions are becoming increasingly dangerous. They also suggest that reassessing the UN’s responsibility is not only relevant to the recent incidents involving Indonesian personnel but also to the broader challenge of protecting peacekeepers around the world.

Therefore, the UN needs to strengthen protection measures, coordination systems, and security procedures for personnel serving in conflict areas.

Challenges Facing the United Nations

The UN is actually in a difficult position. The organization cannot respond immediately without first verifying the available facts. Acting too quickly carries the risk of making the wrong decision and potentially worsening the situation.

On the other hand, responding too slowly creates uncertainty and undermines trust. This is a difficult balance to maintain, especially for countries that have contributed troops to peacekeeping missions.

Nevertheless, these challenges should not prevent the UN from reviewing whether existing mechanisms are sufficient to protect personnel operating in increasingly complex conflict environments.

Conclusion

I believe that the UN must do more to protect peacekeeping forces who risk their lives in conflict areas. The organization needs to respond more quickly when incidents occur so that the facts can be clarified promptly and the victims’ families can receive answers.

The UN should also improve coordination with local authorities and troop-contributing countries. In addition, strengthening security systems and making better use of technology can help improve communication and threat detection.

Ultimately, these incidents should serve as an opportunity to reassess how the United Nations fulfills its responsibility toward peacekeeping personnel. By improving protection, transparency, and accountability, the UN can help prevent similar tragedies in the future and maintain confidence in international peacekeeping missions.

As a society, we must also be careful in sharing information and always rely on credible sources before drawing conclusions.
